The Metropolitan Autonomous University comes out at a particular moment in the country in the end of the sixties and beginning of the seventies that lead to the changes in the way the education was organized, review of the curricula and the teaching methods. All of this was result of the student movement of 1968 and the subsequent movements that favored the education and social improvements. During Luis Echeverria’s administration when the reforms to the Education Federal Law took place and the Education for the Adults National Law was created. The higher education is organized in semesters with fixed schedules and the grades are through credits. The National Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT, Sp. abb.) and the specialized research centers outside the universities are created.
The characteristics of the new university were that it had to be public, metropolitan, autonomous, and innovative regarding education and organization. Its foundation was due to satisfy higher education and an innovative system in constant transformation.
On January 10, 1974 the first rector was the architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, who conceived the university in three campuses, placing the scientific research in Iztapalapa; the traditional careers like Engineering and Architecture in Azcapotzalco and those related to health in Xochimilco.
