Satan’s Flea was a small ship that, during the 19th century crossed the oceans transporting merchandise so unbelievable that an inventory of them could belong to the grounds of fiction. The author of the book takes this name for this series of twenty-one essays playing with multiple points of view and linking themes as unexpected as the prodigies in that ship. This feature isn’t accidental, because Mariana Orantes explores the ambivalent nature of this literary genre, a space for the resistance as well as for the bedazzlement. In this pages are pointed the secret connection between William Blake’s poetical writing and the tradition of Taoism in China; the scientific polemics of the time of the New Spain are brought under the spotlight again, from Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora and his study of comets; we go in a journey across the poetical thought of Roberto Juarroz, or are formulated reflections on gender violence, the role of bureaucracy and the behavior of tyrants, among others.
